Derek, I think what you are talking about is closely akin to "opportunity cost." Spending a dollar on an item precludes you from spending it on another item?
You mention the cost of convenience. A friend at work told me about his father, a blue collar worker that never made more than $17,000 in a given year. He left his children with a $700,000 inheritance when he passed. I doubt he wasted much money on convenience.
Proverbs 13:22 - A good man leaveth an inheritance to his children's children: and the wealth of the sinner is laid up for the just.
