The Wines of Down Yonder Dinner Club and the Men Who Love Them
At Sir Charles request I am posting information on the wines we enjoyed at the last dinner club. This is part 1 in a 3 part series.
Goats Do Roam 2002 (Red Blend)
Deflating the self-importance of French wine makers is reason enough to buy this wine, but there's more to Goats Do Roam than just novelty value.
Like its (sort of) namesake Côtes du Rhône, Goats Do Roam is a dry red wine, but the comparison ends there. In typical New World style, this medium bodied South African red from the Cape is packed with soft-red-fruit flavours and has a spicy finish. This unusual blend of seven grapes creates an easy-drinking wine that still manages to maintain some complexity.
For under a fiver (british pounds), this is an excellent well-rounded wine that tastes like it cost double the price. It goes perfectly with light meat dishes, stands up to spicy food, and is approachable enough to drink alone.
Like the perfect dinner party guest, Goats Do Roam is easy going, happy with any food and witty to boot.
