Just received this email from "Make Trade Fair" via Coldplay (if you'll recall from the Gwinnett concert, lead singer Chris Martin had this organization written on his arm):
"In 2001, 10 US cotton giants received almost $17 million in government
handouts*.
It's thanks to such generous handouts that big US cotton farms are able to
sell their cotton at rock bottom prices; undercutting millions of African
cotton farmers who, without the benefit of million dollar handouts,
simply can't compete.
So while US cotton subsidies mean big bucks for big business in the US,
they spell ruin for millions of African cotton farmers. It doesn't sound
very fair does it? It isn't, but now's your chance to do something about
it.
Email Bush NOW and demand an end to unfair cotton subsidies:
http://maketradefair.com/go/uscotton
George Bush is planning a whistle stop tour of Africa at the beginning of
July. African cotton farmers will be protesting, calling for an end to
unfair US subsidies which are devastating their livelihoods. Join them -
